Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia or Male Breast Enlargement
Gynecomastia or “Male Breast Enlargement” is a very common condition in men. It is benign enlargement of the male breast. It may affect one or both breasts. It can result in terrible embarrassment, teasing, and social trauma. Many will try to hide it with thick loose shirts, avoid bare chest activities like swimming, exercises etc and withdraw from public exposure.
The excess tissue can be combination of variable amounts of breast gland and adipose tissue . It is defined clinically by the presence of a rubbery or firm mass extending concentrically from the nipples. Only excess fat which deposits on the chest without gland enlargement is also called as pseudogynecomastia.
Gynecomastia surgery is for the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. The goal of the male breast reduction is to restore the normal male body image & ultimately self esteem. Patients need careful evaluation by Plastic Surgeon & sometimes if needed by endocrinologist to determine the source of their breast enlargement. Rarely the underlying cause may be a neoplasm, endocrine disorder, metabolic disease or a result of the use of specific drugs. These disorders must be ruled out prior to performing surgery for gynecomastia. Breasts greater than 4 cm in diameter may not completely regress & hence require surgery.

Dr. Bembde has evolved his surgery over the years of experience to maximize patient’s comfort and help early recovery.
We use tumescent Liposuction Technique which has advantages of limited bruising and swelling. The surgical methods vary depending on whether the breasts in the male patient are caused by fatty or glandular tissue and the degree to which any glandular tissue extends laterally along the sides.
Subareolar mastectomy may be needed in combination with liposuction, if the breast gland tissue is firm & quite significant in amount. Reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction surgery may be needed in cases of severe gynecomastia.
Post-surgery
It is a day care surgery. After gynecomastia surgery the patient has to wear the elastic liposuction garment for about eight weeks for better surgical result. He can return to their daily activities after a week period.
Most of the swelling and bruising in the skin disappear during the first two weeks. Three weeks later, patients are able to resume their exercise or sports.
It is really a very simple but rewarding surgery for the male & it definitely boosts his confidence, body image & self respect.
