FAQ about Gynaecomastia
When men develop breasts, the condition is called as Gynaecomastia. Many males during adolescence develop breasts due to hormonal changes occurring that time. This is called physiological gynaecomastia. A majority of these subside on their own, but in a small minority, they persist. Presence of gynaecomastia could be very embarrassing to the person and may affect his self-esteem and morale.
There are many other causes for the development of gynaecomastia such as liver failure, testicular failure, chronic medication with steroids, cimetidine, digitalis etc. It is important that you should get a proper consultation with either an endocrinologist or Aesthetic plastic surgeon who can rule out any cause for the condition. You no longer need to suffer this condition as scientific advances in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery allow us to get rid of male breasts without leaving a mark. Unfortunately, there is no non-surgical way to get rid of male breasts yet.
Who is it for?
Any physically fit male who has significantly large breasts, enough to embarrass him is a candidate for surgical correction. Male breasts could be mild, moderateor servere. Mild breasts usually have a glandular structure under the skin, made up of fat and fibrous tissue. There is usually no excess of skin. In Moderate breasts, along with the gland, there is some excess of skin, which can contract after the gland is removed. In servere gynaecomastia, the excess skin may have to be removed as well.
Can you benefit from gynaecomastia correction?
It is possible to remove the gland and excess skin, leaving an almost normal looking chest. The scars are not visible if only liposuction is used. In other techniques, the scar is barely visible. This procedure is likely to give a boost of confidence to your personality. A feeling of normalcy will improve the quality of your life. It’s not likely to change your life or the way people treat you. It might possibly improve your confidence and self-esteem when you start seeing a better-you in the mirror. Where do I begin? A consultation with your Aesthetic Plastic surgeon at Aesthetics is the first step to learn how gynaecomastia surgery can improve the appearance of your chest. This consultation will fully educate you in a non-pressured environment and will include a discussion of your goals, options available for Gynaecomastia correction, likely outcomes, potential risks and complications.
What kind of anesthesia is required?
Usually the procedure would be done under general anesthetic for improved comfort, yet it is possible to do it under local anesthetic as well.
The procedure
If the breasts are fatty, it is possible to get rid of the breast gland by liposuction alone. This way, apart from a few access ports of less than half a centimeter in size, no other marks are left. It is possible to remove all the fat and leave an even chest. The excess skin contracts in the next six weeks. If the breasts are more fibrous and nodular or if a small nodule is left behind after liposuction, then through a small infra-areolar incision, the residual nodule is removed.
What to expect after surgery?
There might be bruising and swelling after surgery that should subside in 3-6 weeks. You will have a soft and comfortable dressing around chest for firm support. You will also have a tube draining accumulated fluids from each side, if excision is done. The dressing and tubes will be removed simultaneously once the drainage stops. Wounds normally heal in 7 days to 2 weeks. Dr. Bembde and the assisting staff will fully attend to your comfort and safety. You will be advised to wear a compression garment for six weeks after surgery. This will allow all the empty spaces to collapse, allow the skin to contact and retract. The skin will also stick to the chest wall muscles.
Risks and Complications
Although there are very few risks associated with this procedure, a possible general risk includes bleeding and collection of blood under the skin (hematoma). Bleeding is rare but may have to be stopped. Any surgery carries risks associated with anesthesia. There are very few risks if the procedure is done under local anesthesia. These risks will be fully discussed with you prior to your consent for surgery. General risks like delayed wound healing and infections are common to many other operations and can be treated satisfactorily. Specific risks, which are likely to happen after open or excision technique are saucer deformity, inversion or retraction of nipple. Your consultant at Aesthetics will discuss the possibilities of this and ways to avoid them.
Progress and Healing
Incisions usually heal in 7 to 10 days. Stitches are removed around this time. You will be able to return to work and light normal activity in a week’s time. You will then be asked to use a moisturizer and massage the skin of your chest. Healing will continue for several weeks. The compression garment would have to be worn for six weeks. You can start light aerobic lower body exercises by two weeks. Proper weight training can be started in six weeks.
Results and Outlook
Your final result will be visible almost instantly; however, the swelling and bruising will still make the skin look puffy. Most of the swelling resolves by three months.
FAQ about Liposuction
A fit and well proportioned body is often considered a symbol of health and vitality. Despite good health and reasonable level of fitness, some individuals still have excess deposits of localized or generalized fat. These areas may be due to heredity or family traits and resistant to exercise and dieting. The technical advances over the last two decades have enabled removal of such fat by a technique called as liposuction. Liposuction removes fat cells permanently and slims and reshapes specific areas of the body, removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportions and ultimately your self image.
What is liposuction?
It is essentially suction of lipid or fat below the skin through small incisions and using a cannula and a suction device. These techniques may be used to reduce localised fat deposits of the cheeks, chin, neck, upper arms, breast and chest area, back, abdomen and waist, hips and buttocks, thighs, inner calves and ankles. Liposuction can be perfomed alone or in combination with other aesthetic surgery procedures such as facelift, breast reduction or tummy tuck.
Realistic expectations
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. It is not an effective treatment for cellulite. Liposuctions can however permanently reshape body contours where excess fat deposits create areas that are disproportionately large in an otherwise balanced figure.
Who is it for?
Adults of any age within 30% of their ideal weight and with firm elastic skin and good muscle tone. Good candidates are healthy individuals without life threatening illness or medical conditions that impair healing; non-smokers and individuals with positive outlook and specific goals in mind for body contouring. Special considerations may be given to those with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and previous surgery to the treatment areas.
Where do I begin?
A consultation with your Aesthetic surgeon is the first step to learn how liposuction can improve body contours. It should fully educate you about liposuction, yours goals and evalution of your individual case, the options available in surgical liposuction, the likely outcomes of liposuction, risks and potential complications. Your should honestly share your expeetation; fully didclose your health history, current medications, allergies and the use of drugs and smoking.

My Liposuction
Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia or a general anesthesia. A saline, anaesthetic and adrenaline mixture is infiltrated first to assuist the liposuction and reduce the bleeding. Small skin incisions are made for insertion of liposuction cannulas. Either a syringe suction device or machine suction is used to evacuate the fat. Only the fat underneath the skin can be removed in this way. Some of the fat removed can also used for fat grafting in depressed areas. Once the required amount of fat is removed, the incision sites are closed with single stitches.
Post operative care
You will be asked to wear a tight compression garment continuously for 6-8 weeks. Thishelps the skin to adhere to underlying structures and the skin to retract. Temporary drains to remove excess fluid may be removed. Dressing and stiches will removed 7 days after surgery. Once the wounds have healed, you will be encouraged to have the suctioned area massaged. This helps to reduce the post operative welling quickly.
Risks and Complications
Liposuction is a relatively safe procedure in well trained hands. Possible risks include uneven contours, rippling, loose skin, skin or nerve damage, irregular pigmentation, infection, and blood clots. All surgery carries risks associated with anaestheisa.
What to expect?
Initial healing will include swelling, numbness, soreness, brusing and iscomfort. These are common conditions. A combination of paracetamol and Ibuprofen can take care of most of the discomfort. In general, a return to light normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready and is encouraged to prevent blood clots and other complications. Most patients can return to light work in 2 days. There will be considerable brusing initially after surgery and wound need at least 2-3 weeks to reduce. There will also be post operative swelling called edema, which may take several months to go. As it does your new contours and enhanced self-image should continue to develop.
Result and Outlook
Successful liposuction is measured in inches rather than in pounds. As we do not form new fat cells after puberty, once the fat cells are removed they are gone forever. The fulfillment you feel from the initial results of liposuctionshould continue so long as you maintain your weight and practice a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well and regularphysical activity.
